Ron Zaagman aka Ice Ninja

My name is Ron Zaagman and I’m from Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was on seasons 10, 11, and 16 of American Ninja Warrior. I have 3 wonderful kids and an amazing wife, (my high school sweetheart.) I come from a rather large family, I have 9 brothers and sisters. I’m in the middle of the 2nd half as far as birth order goes.

All my life I’ve been overcoming obstacles. When I was just a young man at 10 years old, I was diagnosed with childhood cancer. I went through many rounds of chemotherapy. I lost all my hair, I lost my appetite, and I lost my strength. Through prayers and support from family and friends, I overcame the disease. I’m so thankful the Lord has given me the opportunity to continue to praise him!

My favorite bible verse comes from Isaiah 40:31

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

My greatest ninja accomplishment was my first official amateur competition. Out of 600 competitors I was just one of 14 that completed the course. I had three chances to get up the warped wall and I needed all three to make it to the top! I had other ninjas from the show cheering me on! That was what sparked my interest in Ninja!

I have many interests and hobbies, many of which are full of activity! I teach adults and kids how to skate and play ice hockey. I also drive an Ice resurfacer “Zamboni”. I’ve coached soccer, I’ve been a cub scout leader and most recently I’ve begun coaching a boy’s horse vaulting team. (Horse vaulting is basically team gymnastics…on a moving horse.) I’ve done many 5k’s and I’m into Spartan races and obstacle course racing. I really enjoy pushing myself to the limits!
